Facial depiction, representation and identification

Dr Sarah Shrimpton
Face Lab, Liverpool John Moores University

Face Lab is an interdisciplinary research group focusing on facial depiction and representation, at the interface of art and science. Forming part of the Institute of Art and Technology in the School of Art and design at Liverpool John Moores University, our members include forensic and medical artists, animators, forensic anthropologists and dentists.

This presentation will give an overview of the tools, techniques and methods used by Face Lab for facial depiction and identification work. A few case summaries will be presented that demonstrate the role and importance of our face in relation to the depiction of historical figures, forensic identification, and identity. Examples given will include the facial reconstructions of King Robert the Bruce and animated reconstruction of Robert Burns, that highlight the need for a multi-method approach. Other research projects, such as the Convict Faces and the Brews and Brows projects, which focus on the role of cognitive bias and identity, will also be discussed.
