Bears in Britain: the untold tale

Remains of brown bears have been found on numerous archaeological sites, ranging from burials to playhouses. How did they get there, and are they native animals or imported? This talk will explore human relationships with the brown bear during the Holocene, drawing on material culture and the bones of the animals themselves. Topics will range from the possibility of scapulimancy in the Neolithic to bear-baiting in Shakespeare’s London, shining a light on a much-neglected yet much-loved animal. You’ll never look at a teddy bear in the same way again!
