Animal husbandry and food supply in the Roman Netherlands

The southern part of the modern Netherlands was part of the Roman Empire during the first four centuries AD. Population increase, urbanisation and the strong military presence created an increased demand for food. Local farmers responded to this demand by changing the way they farmed. This paper will discuss some of the evidence for this agricultural transformation, focusing mainly on animal husbandry. I will also discuss food supply to the towns and military camps, as well as the role of animals in craft and industry. Comparing archaeozoological data from the central Netherlands with other regions and case studies will highlight common trends and regional differences.
