“Archaeology and ethnoarchaeology of pastoral landscapes in the Alps”

Since the discovery of the Iceman in a glacier in 1991, the high-altitude landscapes of the Alps have been increasingly investigated by archaeologists. New attention has been given to the long-term interaction between pastoral groups and high-mountain environments, to reconstruct the origin and evolution of transhumance and to investigate human impact on vulnerable mountainous ecosystems. In this paper I will provide an overview of the projects I have been coordinating in the Alps. The fil rouge of this overview will be summer dairying, and how it influenced the use of seasonal pastures over time. A transdisciplinary approach, integrating ethnoarchaeology, spatial analysis and artefact analysis, will shed new light on the role of seasonal cheese production in the history of pastoral landscapes.
