“Celebrating Our Woodland Heritage: Investigating woodlands of the South Pennines”

Until recently, the role of woodland resources in upland communities in Britain has received little archaeological investigation. Celebrating Our Woodland Heritage is a three year project which is bringing together community archaeology and academic research to better understand the history of woodland use in the South Pennines, with a focus on tangible outputs in the form of educational tools and land management recommendations.
This talk will explore the advantages and the challenges of pointing many different disciplines at one regional research question. It will discuss the potential of various archaeological methods used to delve into the woods, as well as their limitations in a highly industrialised and disturbed landscape.
