Repatriation: The good, the bad and the ugly.
Dr Margaret Clegg
University College London

Repatriation is often presented as a dichotomy between return and retain, with reburial the natural outcome. Indigenous peoples want to have remains returned to them so that they can decide what happens to them while museums and other institutions have often claimed that returning remains will lead to a loss for scientific research and humanity.
This is does not have to be the case. Many communities are open to some research being undertaken, but with their consent and the very process of return can provide valuable information that was not apparent during the time the remains were within the museums. This talk will set out some of the outcomes of repatriation provenancing and both the problems of origins of indigenous remains and how building good relationships assists with the repatriation process.

Location

Richmond Building, J Floor, room J19
