Dr Toby Jones begins our spring semester guest lectures with a presentation of the discovery, excavation, documentation and digital reconstruction of the Newport Medieval Ship.
Toby is curator of the Newport Medieval Ship project, a part of Newport City Council, where he has been employed since the post excavation research of the ship began. Toby is a maritime archaeologist, graduating from Texas A&M university, and has undertaken underwater survey in America and the Mediterranean.
With the Newport Medieval Ship project Toby developed a three dimensional recording strategy to accurately document a substantial assemblage of waterlogged timber. The digital recordings have also been used to create a physical reconstruction of the medieval trading vessel. The techniques pioneered on the Newport Medieval Ship project have since been adopted on numerous maritime heritage projects around Europe.
We hope that you will join us in welcoming Toby to Bradford, and enjoy the presentation of adopting novel technologies to understand what may be considered a single massive artefact.
