Dr Ben Jervis, Cardiff University, continues our progression through time in the Archaeological Sciences guest lecture series, with a presentation on urban decay in Medieval Southampton.

Ben is currently a lecturer at Cardiff University, specialising in medieval Britain and ceramic analysis. His research seeks to use material culture to understand how people coped with and experienced change, and how the roots of contemporary society are planted in medieval society. He also applies archaeological theory (particularly ‘non-representational’ theories such as Assemblage Theory and Actor-Network Theory) to important archaeological questions.

Ben is currently researching 3 core areas:
- the material culture of medieval rural households
- the impact of the Norman Conquest of England on dietary practice
- the fortunes of towns in later medieval southern England

Ben has published a number of significant volumes, including Pottery and Social Life in Medieval England- Towards a Relational Approach; Objects, Environment and Everyday Life in Medieval Europe (with Lee G. Broderick and Idoia Grau-Sologestoa); Insight from Innovation- New light on Archaeological Ceramics (with Emilie Sibbesson and Sarah Coxon); and Food and Drink in Archaeology 4 (with Wendy Howard and Kirsten Bedigan).

We hope that you can join us in welcoming Ben to Bradford, and look forward to learning about medieval urban decay.
