Dr Eleanor Bakelock brings our guest lecture series into the Anglo-Saxon period with a discussion on scientific analysis of the Staffordshire Hoard.

You may have seen the Staffordshire Hoard mentioned in the press since its discovery in 2009. The hoard represents the largest collection of Anglo-Saxon gold and silver metalwork ever found, with over 3500 items, comprising 5kg of gold, and nearly 1.5kg of silver. Many questions surround the hoard, such as why was it deposited, and who deposited it.

Eleanor has been conducting metallurgical analysis of the Staffordshire Hoard in order to obtain greater insight in to Anglo-Saxon gold-smithing technology and techniques.

Eleanor is an old Bradfordian, completing her undergraduate degree in Archaeological Science here, before moving on to the Institute of Archaeology, UCL, for her MSc in Archaeological Materials. Unable to stay away for long, Eleanor returned to Bradford to complete her PhD, on Anglo-Saxon and Viking iron and iron-working techniques by studying iron knives.

We hope that you can join us in welcoming an old friend back to Bradford.

JSB theatre, Richmond D floor
