Digital documentation and innovation at the Hill House
Sophia Mirashrafi
Historic Environment Scotland

The Digital Documentation and Digital Innovation teams at Historic Environment Scotland (HES) work to capture and utilize 3D data for storytelling, accessibility, and interpretation. Using laser scans and photogrammetry, they can create 3D models, scientific investigation, virtual tours, and more, to tell new stories about our past.

A key case study is Mackintosh’s Hill House in Helensburgh. Struggling with water ingress exacerbated by the changing climate, it was placed in a shelter by the National Trust for Scotland (NTS).

In order to further document and understand its complex story, the Digital Innovation, Documentation, and Conservation Science teams at HES have come in partnership with the NTS to document the site, and complete moisture mapping and thermographic surveys. This work offers a 3D snapshot of the house, tracking moisture movement and drying over time. This presentation showcases how Digital Documentation can be harnessed as a tool for professionals and visitors alike.
