Continuing Bonds: Using archaeology to talk about death, dying and bereavement.
Dr Karina Croucher
University of Bradford

While death is universal, it remains a difficult topic of conversation for many people. However, discussing the topic can help with advanced planning, can enable better deaths, and can aid wellbeing and resilience in everyday life.

This paper discusses a number of linked interdisciplinary projects (Continuing Bonds, Dying to Talk, Continuing Bonds Toolkit and Creative Dissemination) which use archaeology to inspire conversations around death and dying, making use of the safe ‘way in’ provided by the distance of the past. It also explores the value of the past for contemporary society today, while reflecting on the potential value of contemporary experience for understanding the archaeological record.

These linked projects demonstrate the contemporary value of funerary archaeology for enabling discussions around what can be a challenging topic, and provide tangible evidence of impact the past can hold today.

We look forward to welcoming you online or in Richmond JSB.
