Dead and Buried Launches!

25 Jun by James Walker

We are proud to announce that Jo Buckberry was recently awarded an AHRC-NSF grant to explore “Dead and Buried: Investigating changes in health during the Industrial Revolution using documentary records and human skeletal remains” with Gillian Crane-Kramer and Justin Lowry, SUNY Plattsburgh. The project will explore patterns of chronic heath (from skeletal remains) with data on cause of and age at death (from documentary sources) during the Industrial Revolution. Crucially, it will compare patterns in the UK and USA.

The project employs two postdoctoral researchers in Bradford - Dr Georgia Holmes (archaeologist) and Dr Thomas Wright (historian), who will work on the bioarchaeology and historical demography respectively.

This month Jo travelled to Plattsburgh to work with Gillian and Justin, and to meet graduate interns Connor Scherer and Sarah Davidson, kicking off data collection for the USA. Justin will be visiting Bradford in July, when they plan to eat more ice cream amongst the research!
