Gaza: Approaches to the Built Heritage in a post conflict zone

12 Mar by Gaffney, Vince

We are pleased to invite you to the next in our Guest Lecture series for the term. On Tuesday 17th March, between 17:30 and 18:30 in the JSB Lecture Theatre (Richmond D Floor),

Prof. Andrew Petersen will be talking about “Gaza: Approaches to the Built Heritage in a post conflict zone”. Please join us in giving a warm Bradford welcome to Professor Petersen. As always, lectures are open to all who are interested, so please do share the event and spread the word. There will also be an opportunity, as usual, to decamp afterwards and continue the invigorating discussion around some food and refreshments afterwards.

Abstract: This talk will discuss ways to protect what remains of Gaza's built heritage and recover information on buildings that have been irretrievably lost. Most of Gaza's housing, infrastructure has been built or rebuilt in recent times during the last thirty years although many of the urban areas have historic cores containing traditional buildings as well as individual historic monuments. The high ratio of recently constructed concrete buildings to historic and traditional buildings means that the built heritage of Gaza is of even more cultural significance than in some other areas of Palestine.
