Abstract: Recent years have seen great advances in the study of submerged prehistoric landscapes and continental shelf archaeology around the world. Scholars based at Bradford have been key parts of this emerging field and been key to many of the new developments. To illustrate these developments, this talk will present the results of the Life on the Edge project, and the story of how it emerged.
Bio: Dr. Simon Fitch is a prominent geo-archaeologist and research fellow at the University of Bradford, specializing in the study of submerged prehistoric landscapes. He is a leading figure in the field of marine archaeology, specifically focusing on how environmental changes impacted human populations during the Ice Age. Dr. Simon Fitch is a UKRI Future Leaders Fellow, who is undertaking the “Life on the Edge” project. This research is a ground-breaking interdisciplinary project which will developing field of submerged prehistoric archaeology and the study of the Late Palaeolithic. Dr. Fitch has a pedigree of such work and his doctoral research focused upon the study of submerged prehistoric landscapes and the impacts of environmental and landscape change upon human populations during prehistory. His earlier research included analysis of the offshore landscapes of Wales as part of the ‘West Coast Palaeolandscapes Project’ and the NOAA funded ‘Between the salt water and the sea strand’ which comparatively studied the inundated marine landscapes of the North Sea and the Gulf. His later research has seen him involved in significant projects such as the “Humber REC” (a commercial project in collaboration with the BGS and DEFRA) and the groundbreaking ERC funded "Europe's Lost Frontier's" Project.
