"The Survey" - Lucy Benoit, Bradford placement, stars on Time Team at Sutton Hoo

You’ve seen Ralph Fiennes starring in “The Dig” – the film based on the discovery of Sutton Hoo! Now we’re looking forward to “The Survey” starring Lucy Benoit – the Bradford placement who recently had the opportunity to assist with GPR surveys during Time Team’s fieldwork at Sutton Hoo.

Working alongside Mike Langton (UoB Honorary Lecturer and Senior Applications Engineer at Guideline Geo MALA), Lucy helped with data collection across two sites in the Sutton Hoo area. The team surveyed near the Deben River to investigate a boat-shaped feature discovered during last year’s work, as well as a field showing potential archaeological evidence from magnetometer surveys.

This last-minute opportunity was made possible through the efforts of Lucy’s placement supervisor Michael Pisz and Mike Langton’s coordination. The collaboration proved successful, with Lucy gaining hands-on experience in GPR data collection, learning about processing and interpretation techniques, while also getting insights into archaeological media work as part of the filmed documentation.

Preliminary findings from the Sutton Hoo work can be viewed on Time Team’s YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8o7fjVwZxA&list=PLLgeHX3kbVxRxKioRrx9KcyR-aJuC5zV r with full documentary results to be released in the coming months.
