We are delighted to announce that MSc Human Osteology and Palaeopathology graduate, Carlos Silva Carvalho, has won a Holger Schutkowski masters dissertation prize, awarded by the British Association for Biological Anthropology and Osteoarchaeology (BABAO). The prize is named after Prof Holger Schutkowski, former Head of SAFS and the Biological Anthropology Research Centre at Bradford. BABAO Grants Secretary, Maia Casna, said “The trustees were very impressed by the quality of your work and look forward to your continued contributions to the field.”

Carlos’ dissertation, entitled “Worked to the Bone: An Investigation into Labour Division in a Transylvanian, Hungarian-Szekler Community (AD 1050-1800)” developed from his experience excavating in Romania as part of his BSc Forensic Archaeology and Anthropology. It was supervised by Dr Jo Buckberry, Dr Katie Zejdlik and Dr Jonathan D Bethard. This prize follows on from his success last year, when he won a Don Brothwell undergraduate dissertation prize, also awarded by BABAO.

Carlos has won £50, a one-year BABAO membership and an invitation to present his research at the upcoming BABAO annual conference. Carlos will be starting a PhD at Ohio State University in August. Congratulations Carlos!
