SAFS researchers have been awarded a Royal Society Exchange Grant to fund the development of research collaborations and relationships between the UK and Japan.
Led by Dr. Simon Fitch (UK) and Prof. Yasuhisa Kondo (Japan) this will bring together researchers from the Bradford Submerged Landscapes Research Centre (SLRC) and SOKENDAI (Graduate University of Japan), and Japan’s Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (RIHN), a national research institute established by the Government of Japan in 2001.
British and Japanese scholars will collaborate to resolve issues associated with the study of submerged Late Palaeolithic archaeological resource of Japan and its submerged landscape. The UK partners will provide skills in submerged archaeological landscape survey, whilst the Japanese partners will provide knowledge and skills in Late Palaeolithic Archaeology and G.I.S mapping.
The project includes exchange visits for scholars and hosting of students from each other’s countries. These exchanges will not only strengthen the scientific understanding of the archaeology and its associated geoarchaeology, but also build strong links between the institutions and their countries. It is also hoped that resulting partnership will provide global benefits through the development of innovative methods that will improve the understanding of the vast inundated prehistoric landscapes that are found around the world.
