Experiencing geophysics with GSB (Geophysics Students Bradford)

September 2024 marks the beginning of a new student research society dedicated to geophysical research: GSB. In the past, there was no formal arrangement to involve students in surveys and the new student society aims to provide one.

In 2023, two undergraduates helped survey German death camps in Poland. This was a valuable experience for them, but we want to make sure all students have equal access to these opportunities.

Last year, a forensic dissertation project involving geophysical survey results allowed for other students to help and get some practice in the field. Over the summer, during the first year’s training excavations in Priddy, Somerset, the students were able to use different types of survey equipment on site.

And now, here we are! A brand-new student research society, with the goal to provide the space and opportunities to experience geophysical research. Our ambitions for the future are wide reaching and varied. These include students conducting their own research projects, processing data and attending conferences.

Members of the GSB have had two poster abstracts accepted for the Near Surface Geophysics Group (NSGG) Conference. One was to present a promising ongoing project with the community group ALERT, and the other investigates methods to locate clandestine graves in peat.
As a wise proverb, attributed to Benjamin Franklin says: “Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn.”

Stay tuned to hear more about our adventures or, even better, come and join us and share the fun!!
