Solstice special. Geophysicists, stone circles and lightning strikes

22 Dec 2019 by Admin Little Stoke

It’s the Solstice and Bradford archaeologists and researchers from St Andrews and Lampeter have discovered a massive lightning strike in the centre of a partially surviving stone circle. Site XI near the famous Stones of Calanais on Lewis.

The strike predates the peat covering the remains of the circle. Whether it was attracted to the stones in the windswept landscape, or an earlier feature, is uncertain but the dramatic find, only seen through geophysical survey, may reveal something about the role of natural events in the siting of early ritual monuments.
