Musicalizing Heritage and Heritagizing Music for Enhancing Community Awareness in the Preservation of World Heritage Sites in Africa
Dr Elgidius B. Ichumbaki [Ichu], University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Wednesday 5th December. 1-2:00 pm, Richmond L4

For the past two centuries or so, education systems in Africa has changed from ‘parental- to school-based training.’ With this pedagogical shift, children and youths are mentored using school curricula which say very little on cultural heritage sites incommunities they are born and raised. Regrettably, heritage research outputs such as books and articles in international journals are not accessible to local populations. Whenever these publications are accessed, the contents are too technical to understand central arguments. Consequently, their heritage sites and associated values remain less known to local communities. This unawareness of local communities on heritage sites’ values is higher to teenagers and youths. The major question remains how can we raise youth awareness to appreciate cultural heritage sites in their communities and hence, engage in preservation projects? Using Tanzania’s ‘Bongo Flavour’ (BF) music as a case study, this talk will offer an empirical evidence on how music could become one of the best art strategies to raise community awareness on the values of heritage sites in Africa. With BF music at Kilwa Kisiwani World Heritage Site, Tanzania (see image below), youths have developed interest of preserving monuments and participate in heritage protection initiatives than was the case before.
