Grant success for SAFS PhD student

14 Feb 2018 by Eddy Faber

Congratulations to Solange Bohling who has been awarded an annual research grant from the Society for Church Archaeology. Due to her successful application, Solange has received £990 to fund three research analysis trips to look at the human skeletal material from three Christian Anglo-Saxon cemeteries (8th-10th centuries AD). Solange’s research investigates physical impairment and disability in the later Anglo-Saxon period and this grant will supplement the data she has already collected during her PhD research. A detailed palaeopathological analysis of individuals with possible physical impairment (i.e., limb length discrepancies, severe infection, deformities) will be combined with an examination of funerary treatment (i.e., limb position, grave orientation, grave location) to investigate later Anglo-Saxon attitudes towards physical impairment and disability.
